The route we intend to use is the classic coast to coast route from Workington to Sunderland, the distance is 220 kms / 122 miles and should take around 12 hours.
The route is mainly minor roads and tarmac cycle ways for the first 160 kilometers, from Rookhope to Sunderland there are some sections of off road on well graded gravel tracks.
The ride would be perfect on a cyclocross type bike but very rideable on a road bike with good tyres so don’t be put off if you you are going to use a road bike.
David Tomlinson will be supporting the ride all the way with the minibus and will bring a selection of spares if needed. George Kinghorn will take bikes to the start point in his sprinter van, we will decide the pick up point when we get final confirmed numbers but we would be starting at this end around 4.30am
The plot a route a map shows the route not including Workington to Seaton the first 4 miles, Sustrans have introduced a cycle way through Workington to Seaton since I last completed the ride but its well signed as is the entire route
The cost of the trip includes the minibus hire and fuel for the minibus and van.
The maximum number we can take is 14 . It would be helpful if you can arrange to be picked up at Sunderland but if not I can give some a lift home in the bus with bikes
The plan is to ride as a group to make it as enjoyable as possible.
There are some shorter routes and some faster routes and some all on road but cycling is about enjoyable routes as well and this is the most enjoyable route and I hope you still believe when you reach Roker Beach for a beer
