Active School Week 2022
Cycling Ireland is proud to support Active School Week which takes place from Tuesday 03 to Friday 06 May. The theme for Active School Week is Ideas and Inspiration and this year Cycling Ireland is encouraging schools to get creative and design a cycling obstacle course.
Obstacle courses are great fun and provide children with an opportunity to develop the four fundamental skills of cycling – Balance, Braking, Cornering and Pedalling while also learning bike handling skills. Obstacle courses can be easily adapted depending on the cyclist’s level making them simpler or more challenging. A sample obstacle course and video demonstrations on how to set up an obstacle and progress the stations can be found here.
Competition
Schools are encouraged to be as creative as possible when creating their obstacle course, while making use of whatever equipment is available. As an incentive, Cycling Ireland is running a competition, giving one school a chance to win the following:
• Sprocket Rocket Session delivered to the class who created the obstacle course
• Q&A – with a top Irish rider at your school
• Demonstration - Irish rider completes the schools winning obstacle course
• Pictures – memento to keep for the future
To enter the competition, Schools must share a video of their obstacle course on social media tagging Cycling Ireland and email programmes@cyclingireland.ie to confirm your entry. The prize will go to the school/class with the most creative obstacle course. (Multiple classes from the one school may enter the competition but only one can win).
Keep an eye on the Cycling Ireland social media channels to see some top riders try out different stations of the obstacle course.
