Aim
This workshop is evidence-based and designed specifically to support coaches of teenage girls. Reflecting the importance of the coach-athlete relationship, and specifically the role of the coach in a young girl’s development, a strong emphasis is placed throughout the workshop on supporting coaches to identify and engage in effective coaching practice. This involves employing a positive and athlete-centred coaching framework, to support the development of the autonomy, capabilities, and sense of belonging that underpin lifelong engagement in sport and physical activity and the physical literacy journey of each girl.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the workshop and associated activities, learners will be able to:
Identify the key reasons why girls engage in physical activity and sport and why they drop out.
Gain an understanding of the relationship between physical activity participation and mental health for adolescent girls.
Understand the importance of communication (coach to girl and girl to girl) in retaining girls in sport.
Raise awareness around the effects maturation and puberty can have on females.
Identify the role of actual competence, perceived competence and confidence for engaging girls in sport and physical activity.
Examine coaching practices and communication that foster autonomy, confidence, and belonging in girls across team and individual sports.
Design environments that cater for relationships, connectedness and competition.
Who is it for?
The programme is aimed at sports coaches of teenage girls who are interested in creating a participant centred environment where the content and context of coaching is driven by the needs of the girls.
Coaches who attend the workshop should do so with an open mind to the content, share and discuss their experiences with other coaches and be prepared to grow their coaching practice.
