The 2022 UCI Cross Clonmel event provided an exciting weekend of Cyclocross action in the second edition of the UCI C2 race.
Hosted by Clonmel Cycling Club, there was a full schedule of races across Saturday and Sunday, concluding with an elite women and men’s race on Sunday afternoon.
Wind and rain dominated the proceedings in the Elite Men’s Race on Sunday afternoon as 37 riders – including a host of international riders – took the line.
And a breakaway of three riders soon established themselves at the front of the race, with Toby Barnes and Jenson Young, both from Garden Shed – Ribble – Verge Sport, as Ben Chilton from Spectra Wiggle fighting for the win.
Barnes managed to get ahead and took a solo victory, with Chilton winning the sprint against Young in the battle for second and third.
In the Women’s Elite Race, Anna Kay set a blistering pace from the outset that splintered the field into pieces after the fifth lap – the 777 rider went on to take a solo victory.
The hierarchy of the Podium was never in doubt in the final laps as Xan Crees (Spectra Wiggle) finished on her own in second while Libby Bell (Garden Shed – Ribble – Verge Sport) also came in out on her own in third.
There was a full schedule of Junior and Masters races throughout the morning in Powerstown Park, with racing getting underway with the M50 and M60 races beginning at 9 am.
Des Woods of Newry Wheelers CC took the M50 Race as Team Worc rider David Lawless was victorious in the M60. Blarney Cycling Club’s Mark Pinfield led the M40 Race from start to finish in an impressive win.
In the Junior Men’s Race, Irish National champion Liam O’Brien (Fermoy Cycling Club) was joined by visitors Oli Akers and Seb Grindley - both from Garden Shed – Ribble – Verge Sport - in a breakaway that would fight for the win.
The trio had the race to themselves until the last lap, when O’Brien suffered a mechanical on the forest section of the course. That allowed Akers and Grindley to open a gap that couldn’t be closed with Akers taking the win ahead of his teammate Grindley, setting the tone for their Elite Men’s Race victory later in the day.
