The second round of the 2023 Cross-country National Series took place on Sunday, May 21st, as spectators and riders enjoyed another great day of racing.
After a busy opening round at the Leadmines, the second round brought some of Ireland’s best mountain bike riders to Fermoy, Co. Cork, over the weekend.
Robin Seymour and Gareth McKee provided some of the best racing of the day as they did battle at the front of the senior 1 men’s race, swapping leadership throughout.
But veteran Seymour proved just too strong on the final climb as he pulled away to take victory and follow up his first round win.
Joanna Bula was the strongest in the senior 1 women’s race, improving on her third place finish in the first round, while Tara Brennan won the senior 2 women’s race in a strong ride.
Jake White was the comfortable winner of the junior men’s race as Fionn Desmond battled past Cameron McFarland to win the senior 3 men’s race.
In the beginners senior 4 men and senior 3 women categories, Ciaran Campbell and Olivia Kiely were first across the line.
A host of youth races also took place across the day as the future stars of cross-country showed off their skills.
In the U16 category, Conor Murphy picked up a strong win after bowing out of the first round with illness while Greta Lawless doubled up to make it two from two in the National Series.
Aoife Craig and Caleb McGreevy were dominant in their respective U14 category races, while in the U12 category, James Cunningham and Ava Baker picked up strong wins.
In the U10 category, Jack McGahan came first in a tight race while Aoife Campbell finished well clear of the field.
Conor McGahan and Rionach Campbell were U8 winners as nine boys and two girls took part in an U6 fun race.
